We have expanded our narrative range in the last month and wanted to start sending out a once a week listicle of articles available for you to read. This is the first of these emails. We also want to apologize for the email sent last Monday on “Must-Eat Istanbul.” It’s not that we don’t want you to read it, we just emailed it out on accident. The topics you can expect from this newsletter moving forward include: publishing, nonprofit, travel, culture, art, food, social, and health. These will have an international focus.
If you have been receiving these emails with our free subscription, thank you for reading. If you would like to support these efforts, please consider being a paid subscriber so that we can expand and continue to bring you quality content. Our goal isn’t to fill you with news and politics, but rather the things that are important to your mental, physical, and overall well-being while also helping you expand your awareness of the world and to help you with your efforts to also impact the world.
Paid subscription can be $7/month or $70/year. You can also be a founding member and receive a free copy of the book “RootEd: How Trauma Impacts Learning and Society.” This book is also available on the paid subscription of this newsletter.
Culture
Immurement in the Balkans
Immurement is otherwise known as live entombment. It is exactly as it sounds. In these tales, women are sacrificed for various reasons and entombed alive in construction that can be found throughout this region. Countries focused on in this article include: North Macedonia, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. All have similar tales, so we are including them together for comparison.
Health
Secondary Trauma
Secondary trauma is the result of being exposed to the trauma of others. This takes place through conversations, through the media, and when working with those who are experiencing trauma. Frequently referred to by clinicians as secondary trauma stress, it has recently become recognized as a form of posttraumatic stress disorder in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).
